Workers will work for you and automatically collect gold based on their level.
Upgrading your workers will increase your gold income rate. While the gold income of your worker grows linearly (Ex: 2, 4, 6 gold/click), its upgrade cost grows exponentially (Ex: 3, 9, 27 gold) making it harder to upgrade to the next level the higher that level is.
Various upgrades/unlocks can help increase your workers' gold income, such as an island upgrade or a skill.
As mentioned above, the cost of upgrading workers increases exponentially, which means that each subsequent upgrade becomes increasingly more expensive. This can lead to diminishing returns, where the benefits of the upgrade become smaller and smaller as the cost increases.
To maximize your gold income, it's essential to find a balance between upgrading your workers and purchasing other upgrades or skills that can boost your gold income.
As you progress through the game and your gold income increases, you'll need to consider different strategies for allocating your resources. For example, you might focus on upgrading a single worker to a very high level, or you might choose to spread your upgrades across multiple workers.
Workers you can unlock are (from weakest to strongest, in terms of price and gold income):
